>> we'll put our "today" family to the test and get good advice. a serious subject. that breaking news overnight. nbc's stephanie gosk is there. good morning to you. >> good morning matt. this happened around lunchtime on a commuter bus. officials are saying it is a terrorist attack although not a suicide attack. this will be a familiar scene for people in the city and around this country about a decade ago, this was a regular tactic used by palestinian militants. they haven't seen it in a while. the last bomb blast was in 2004. it's likely to at least complicate some of the discussions that have been going on trying to reach a cease-fire. we had thought they were near a cease-fire last night. it turns out that they were not. today hamas called this a heroic attack. matt? >> stephanie gosk in tel aviv.

a man mow hadean is in gaza. good morning to you. >>. >> good morning, matt. what a difference 24 hours make. yesterday, the palestinian people in gaza woke up to the news that a truce could be signed by the end of the day. on wednesday morning, they woke up to the sound of more shelling, a higher death toll and the news that a cease-fire could be reached. it's not happening any time soon. >> there were talks of peace late into the night. but in gaza, it was anything but quiet. while factions traded fire, secretary of state hillary clinton arrived to the region to broker a truce. meeting today with mahmoud abbas and last night with israeli prime minister, benjamin netanyahu. >> the united states will work with our partners toward an outcome that bolsters security for the people of israel. improved conditions for the people of gaza and move toward a comprehensive peace. >> while the sides talk peace, gaza remained a war zone.

daylight revealed the scope of israel's destruction. this it claimed were the hamas terror hubs. this government building was the intended target. there was no one here at the time of the strike. instead, it's the regular people who live like this one behind me that are paying the ultimate price. it's what israel calls collateral damage. >> it's forced thousands of palestinian to turn to u.n. schools turned into makeshift shelters like this one. factions remain defiant. >> speaking about the cease-fire, boom, they're shooting off. >> israel warned it's prepared to invade gaza. for now, it's relying on the superior air power. overnight it struck tens of targets including this key bridge, effectively cutting gaza in half. while the rockets and missiles fly and efforts are in full swing, still anyone's guess

>> a few of the protests have begun. >> this one tuesday out outside a walmart near los angeles. store workers and stoare complaining about hours and retaliati retaliation. >> the wages are low. sometimes we have to rely on family help. >> they're very good with the prices. but the prices are coming out our pockets. >> some are upset about working on thanksgiving when walmart begins special sales at 8:00 p.m. >> they say they care about associates and want what's best for them. because if it was, we wouldn't be working on thanksgiving. >> walmart workers who are nonunion plan to hold strikes and protests at a thousand locations around the country on black friday, the day after thanksgiving. their goal is not to shut down stores but to inform customers about how they are treated by their employers. >> black friday is one of the

most important days in retail. it's really the super bowl of all retail. the walmart employees know this. that's why they chose black friday for the pinnacle of these protests. >> in a statement, walmart says, our stores will be operating normally on black friday and our customers will see nothing unusual when they shop. it went on to say in response to complaints, the fact is, our pay an benefits plan are as good or better than our retail competitors, including those that are unionized. to try to stop the protest, walmart has filed a complaint with the national labor relations board claiming a union that doesn't represent walmart workers is illegally involved in the picketing. >> now, a worker group also filed a complaint against walmart alleging that walmart is being threatening. the labor board calls it a complex issue and it will be tomorrow before it decides whether to try to stop the protests. savannah in. >> mark potter in florida, thank

you. duncan mcnaughton is the marketing officer. sir, good morning to you. >> good morning, savannah. thanks for having us on. happy thanksgiving to you and your team. >> you too. >> why do you expect widespread picketing on friday? >> savannah, we do not. we're confident about a great shopping experience for our customer. we'll have a million walmart associates serving our customers tomorrow at 8:00, 10:00 and again 5:00 friday morning. what you're seeing in the media and in the news is a small group of walmart associates and a select number of stores and we'll have 4,000 stores open, ready to go. as you may know. our stores are always open on thanksgiving day. >> as you say, this is a small groupment then again, the company filed a complaint to stop the protests. that does indicate the company takes this fairly seriously, correct? >> savannah, i think the key is that there's a small group of walmart associates complemented

by a number of nonwalmart associates that are paid by the union and we just want to make sure we have a great event for our customers. that's what we're prepared to do. 8:00 thursday night, we have a great event, broad assortment of products. 10:00 for the first time ever, savannah. this is the super bowl of retail. we will guarantee in stock three great product. if our customers are in line at our store, they're going to get the product that night or it will be in that store before christmas. >> let's stay on topic for one minute. if someone pickets who is an employee of your store, will they face retaliation? will they be fired or see their hours cut down in. >> savannah, we have a really open culture. it's all about listening to our associates and based in integrity with respect for the individual. our operators and our store managers always want to listen to the concerns of our associates and we do that all the time. >> no ramifications if somebody protests?

>> we'll treat each case individually, savannah. >> duncan mcnaughton, thank you for being on the show this morning. we appreciate it. once again, here's matt. meantime, millions are getting away today for the thanksgiving holiday. that means the roads are going to be packed. our jeff rossen is on i-95. jeff, how does it look out there? my family wouldn't let me drive and talk at the same time. probably smartly. we have our driver behind the wheel. i'm not bitter. just disappointed. we're on i-95 in a bit of traffic. some of this is heading into new york. a lot of people are traveling for thanksgiving. in fact, this is the busiest travel day today. 43.6 million americans will travel. 90% of us will travel today by car believe it or not. that's more than last year. the average distance traveled, if you want factoids to impress your friends at thanksgiving, about 588 miles. there's also a very interesting

issue here in the northeast. rental cars almost impossible to find because thousands of them were flooded by hurricane sandy. if you're trying to get a rental car, probably didn't have much luck. as far as air travel, good news, it's down from last year, so the airports will be a little emptier. when you're shopping for airfare, that's down as well. about 11%. the average price for a ticket within the u.s. today is $188. finally, buses, cruise ships and trains, 1.3 million americans traveling that way today. so here we are on i-95. we're hoping to get back to you matt. i hear you're cooking dinner. >> you might want to head in the other direction. thank you very much. good to see you. >> you're cooking but he's not invited? >> don't want my cooking, that's all. >> let's get a check of the top stories. natalie morales is at the news desk. >> good morning savannah and

matt and everyone. a last-ditch effort to save hostess brands has failed. the second largest union broke down late tuesday. the cake maker heads to bankruptcy court today to let a judge decide what the company can liquidate. there may be hopes for twinkies as other companies could snap up the popular brand. the taliban is taking responsibility for a -- two suicide bombers were stopped by afghan guards in the neighborhood packed with foreign embassies. the two guards who foiled the attack were killed. officials in india say the only surviving gunman from mumbai was executed today. he was one of ten gunmen who attacked a train station, jewish center and hotels. the rampage claimed 166 lives. now, let's head to wall street. >> good morning, nootly. after intense focus on the

fiscal cliff negotiations, the markets could put the spotlight back on the european debt crisis amid a deadlock in greek debt talks. it's going to be a quiet day. it's the day before thanksgiving. u.s. economic data is not yet on the -- consumer sentiment data, jobless claims and an outlook indicator to give us guidance for the markets today. >> mandy drury, have a happy thanksgiving. >> you too. >> thanks. this could be the best night on the basketball court ever. jack taylor obliterated the ncaa record last night when he scored and scored and scored again. 138 points in a single game. making 52 of 108 attempted shots. the previous scoring record was set back in 1954 with 113 points. the feat is so impressive even the pros are tipping hats with kevin durant tweeting, jack taylor, you deserve a shot of jack daniel's after that performance.

our erica hill is with an update. erica, good morning to you. >> savannah, good morning. really seemed something more like a hollywood movie. an 18-year-old woman spent 18 hours thinking she was going to die and now the man responsible is going to jail. >> it's really all over. >> reporter: australian teen madeline pulver expressing relief after the sentencing of a man who strapped a fake bomb around her next in a failed extortion bid. >> i'm pleased with today's outcome and that i can now look to a future without his name being linked to mine. >> reporter: former investment banker paul peters was sentenced to 13 and a half years in prison after breaking into the family's luxury home in 2011. maddy was at home alone studying. dressed in a ski mask and armed with a black baseball bat which this surveillance tape shows him purchasing, peters linked a

chain with a small black box around maddy's neck. before fleeing peters left information with maddy saying the black box was full of explosives and leaving instructions on how to transfer money. it took ten terrifying hours to determine there were no explosives. >> moments ago we have secured the release of the young lady. >> reporter: incident led to a worldwide manhunt. peters was eventually found in lexington, kentucky and extradited back to australia. peters had claimed the hoax was the result of a delusion brought on by drinking and depression, but the judge ruled, quote, the offender was aware of the nature and quality of his acts. afterwards the pulver family expressed their gratitude to police and to australia's court system >> i realize it is going to take quite some time to come to terms with what happened, but today was important because now the legal process is over. >> reporter: there is still a question of while maddy, while some court documents say paul

san jose police on the scene of a deadly hit and run. that is where bob rydell is. what can you tell us? what's the latest? >> reporter: good morning, jon. we're here at the intersection of allen rock and jackson in san jose. we're waiting for the coroner to arrive to complete their part of the investigation and remove the body, as you can see, it is still in the middle of the road. it appears this person was carrying a backpack of some sort, perhaps trying to cross the street when they were hit and killed. this was a hit and run. police are looking for that driver. the only description they have is the dark colored vehicle heading wet bound on allen rock. we understand at least one witness who flagged down a bus, offer help, was able to identify the car. route 70 by the way is being rerouted. a investigation will focus on the road conditions at the time. it was just after 6:00 this happened so it was still dark out and most likely raining at the time. you can see, it's been raining off and on. so whether weather conditions played a role in the accident will be part of the

have big consequences. thousands of tourists visit arlington cemetery every year to pay their respects to this country's fallen soldiers, but last month 30-year-old lindsey stone photographed herself doing something very different. >> it's bad. it's just a shame. >> horrible. what is wrong with this world? >> reporter: in this picture lindsey can be seen flipping off the too many of the unknowns and pretending to scream in front of a sign requesting silence and respect. >> oh, i was appalled. i mean, it's not what lindsey is about or i'm all about or this family is about. >> stone's father speaking to our affiliate whdh in boston apologized for the photo posted on her daughter's facebook page as a joke. >> beside herself. no idea it would go where it went. >> reporter: to lindsey's surprise the picture went viral and even a facebook page called

fire lindsey stone. lindsey and her co-worker have been placed on leave at the assisted living home live, inc where they both work and he re-leased this statement. this photograph in no way reflects the opinions, thoughts or feelings of the life organization. lindsey and her friend who took the picture also released a statement saying we sincerely apologize for all the pain we caused by posting the picture. we never meant to disrespect any of the people nationwide who have served this country and defended our freedom so valiantly. but these veterans in hyannis, massachusetts don't care if it was a joke or not. to them it's offensive either way. >> pretty disrespectful, and stupid. people do stupid things in this country every day. that's one of them right there, for sure. >> and in their statement lindsey and her co-worker add that had they recognize the photo was distasteful and ignorant. how that affects their work remains to be seen. both are now on unpaid leave.

channel 24/7 or weather.com online. savannah? >> all right, al. thanks. now to the resignation of a man who brought elmo to life on "sesame street." kevin clash stepped down amid shocking new allegations about his personal room. washing, if you have little ones in the room be careful about watching this one. nbc's chris jansing has more on this one. good morning to you. >> good morning. such a sad story on so many levels. kevin clack transformed elmo from a niner "sesame street" character to a superstar of children's television and a major money-maker, but this morning he's facing at least one lawsuit and lawyers for an alleged victim have contacted criminal authorities. for 28 years kevin clash was the voice and heart of "sesame street's" iconic elmo, but on tuesday he resigned saying in a statement personal matters have diverted attention away from the important work "sesame street" is doing, and can i not allow it to go on any longer.

and this morning clash is a defendant in a $5 million lawsuit that charges he trolled gay telephone chat line rooms to meet and have sex with underage boys. 24-year-old cecil singleton claims his sexual relationship with clash began nearly a decade ago when he was 15 and clash 43. >> in retrospect, it has occurred to me as an adult how truly inappropriate my relationship with kevin was. >> reporter: he says he was motivated to come forward after a 24-year-old made a similar allegation last week, though he later recanted. >> since i found out that there were other people or victims in a similar circumstance i felt very guilty. >> reporter: sesame workshop released a statement saying none of us, especially kevin, want anything to divert our attention from our focus on serving as a leading educational organization. unfortunately, the controversy surrounding ketch's personal life has become a distraction.
